Puntland Marine Police Forces Recover SIBU 1 Tanker, Rescue All 20 Crew Members
The Puntland Maritime Police Force has recovered the oil tanker M.T. SIBU 1/SEAMUL from Somali pirates, rescuing all 20 crew members in an operation that marks a significant result for Puntland’s maritime-security efforts.

In a statement issued on 25 September, the PMPF accounted for 47 suspected pirates: one killed during the operation, five wounded and 41 others held unharmed.
The statement updates the preliminary figures released after the operation. The casualty and detention figures remain the force’s official account and have not been independently verified.
The PMPF said all crew members and the property aboard the vessel were safe. It identified the crew as 16 Indian nationals, two Syrians, one Iraqi and one Sudanese national.
A senior Puntland maritime officer involved in commanding the operation also briefed Puntland Signal on the mission’s execution and the detention of suspected pirates.
The PMPF reaffirmed its readiness to protect Puntland’s maritime and land security and safeguard its population. Its statement did not specify where the detainees were being held or outline the next steps in the legal process.
What the operation demonstrates
The recovery of SIBU 1 provides a concrete example of Puntland’s operational capacity to confront maritime hijackings. Rescuing the crew and taking a substantial number of suspects into custody gives the mission significance beyond the recovery of a single vessel.
Its lasting value will depend on connecting action at sea with investigations ashore. Preserving evidence, prosecuting suspects through due process and identifying those who finance or supply hijacking groups are essential to weakening the networks behind piracy.
The operation also strengthens the practical case for international cooperation that builds Puntland’s maritime institutions. Support for coastal surveillance, intelligence sharing and criminal investigations could help translate individual operational successes into sustained security.
For Puntland, the next challenge is to maintain pressure on pirate networks, limiting their ability to regroup, obtain supplies and prepare further attacks.
